aditus participates in Malta Gay Pride activities

aditus Chairperson, Neil Falzon, participated in two events organised by the Malta Gay Rights Movement (MGRM).  On Friday 8th, Neil delivered a presentation on the Forms of Legal Recognition of Same Sex Couples, a seminar organised by MGRM with the support of the US Embassy in Malta.  Neil’s presentation provided an overview of the three main forms of legal recognition of same sex couples: marriage equality, registered partnerships, cohabitation.

The presentation may be downloaded here (pdf).  The presentation was delivered in Neil’s capacity as Legal Advisor to MGRM.

The following morning Neil participated in I Am Pride, Malta’s Pride march that saw about 200 persons walking the streets of Valletta, followed by a number of speeches from representatives of the three political parties, and others.

aditus participates in ‘Fleeing Homophobia’ project

On Monday 30th and Tuesday 31st May aditus Chair Neil Falzon attended a meeting in Amsterdam organised by the COC Netherlands as part of the Fleeing Homophobia project. The project is an EU-wide study on the treatment of LGBTI asylum-seekers in EU Member States’ asylum procedures.  In Amsterdam, all National Experts met with the project partners to discuss the issues raised in the respective national research and how all this valuable information could be best utilised for advocacy purposes…nationally yet also regionally and internationally.

A publication is planned, gathering information from the national reports (questionnaires) in thematic chapters.  it is envisaged that the report will be finalised and launched at a September conference.  You can find additional information regarding the conference at the link above, you are strongly encouraged to attend!

‘Fleeing Homophobia’ is a project of COC Netherlands and VU University Amsterdam, in cooperation with the Hungarian Helsinki Committee, Avvocatura per i diritti LGBT/Rete Lenford, and the European Council on Refugees and Exiles.  It is funded by the European Refugee Fund, the Dutch Ministry of Justice, and the participating organisations.

Mediterranean network of NGOs working in LGBTI issues

On Friday 27th and Saturday 28th June, Neil Falzon was in Athens to attend a networking meeting for Mediterranean NGOs working directly or indirectly with LGBTI issues.  Several NGOs were present from Malta, Albania, Turkey, Cyprus (North and South) and Greece, meeting with the aim of discussing common concerns and suggesting ways of cooperating effectively.  The meeting was also attended by representatives of ILGA Europe.

aditus is becoming increasingly active in LGBTI issues, as evidenced in its public support of Joanne Cassar’s judicial battle for the recognition of the right of transgender persons to marry and also in its recent public condemnation of statements regarding ‘conversion’ of homosexuality.  As a minority group with limited access to its fundamental human rights, LGBTI persons clearly fall within aditus’ interest area.
