‘Fuocoammare’: World Refugee Day 2016

Samuele is 12 years old and lives on an island in the middle of the sea.

He goes to school, loves shooting his slingshot and going hunting. He likes land games, even though everything around him speaks of the sea and the men, women and children who try to cross it to get to his island.

But his is not an island like the others, its name is Lampedusa and it is the most symbolic border of Europe, crossed by thousands of migrants in the last 20 years in search of freedom.

For World Refugee Day 2016, we are teaming up with the Valletta Film Festival, the Italian Cultural Institute and UNHCR Malta to bring you two events:

Conversation on refugees crossing the Mediterranean Sea: 7 June @ 18.00, Old University Building, Valletta.

Dr. Pietro Bartolo, the protagonist of the award-winning film ‘Fuocoammare’ will be present for the discussion. Dr. Bartolo is the head of health services in Lampedusa and a man at the forefront of the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean.

Together with Neil Falzon, aditus foundation Director and Fabrizio Ellul, UNHCR Malta, Dr. Bartolo will be sharing his thoughts on asylum seekers attempting the dangerous voyage across the Mediterranean Sea. This discussion on the reasons and consequences of these voyages continues to be a relevant one.

Admission is free of charge.

Screening of the award-winning film ‘Fuocoammare’: 8 June @ 21.00, Fort St. Elmo, Valletta.

Admission requires a ticket from the Valletta Film Festival.
