Keith Schembri charged: justice will prevail

We welcome the arrests and charges of last night, in particular those relating to Keith Schembri, chief of staff of disgraced Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.

The charges further confirm that Malta’s institutions have reached an unprecedented level of failure and collapse. They underline the urgency for all persons involved in damaging the nation to face justice for their heinous actions. Importantly, they are a reminder that the nation needs to show the maturity to face this state of affairs and start a process of genuine democratisation.

Last night’s arrests were an affirmation of the paramount importance of an independent media and an active civil society as fundamental pillars of justice, democracy and rule of law.

It is of course regrettable that these charges were brought so late, too late for many.
