The Life of the Others Project kicked off in Malta on the 8th March with a training workshop organised by aditus foundation, Storydoc and Kinemastik Malta. This project is being implemented across the Euromed region together with partners from Greece (StoryDoc), Morocco (Association House of Culture and Art (A.M.C.A)), Palestine (Young Palestinian Filmakers Society) and Algeria (Institution of Artists).
Seven aspiring documentary filmmakers attended the workshop and presented their project ideas which aim to document the lives of people of different ethnic and social groups: these included stories portraying the contrasting lives of Scandinavian and African migrants in Malta, Maltese returnees trying to find their place back in Malta, Muslims living and working in Malta, young refugees socialising in youth clubs, a portrayal of a transgender person and the difficulties encountered by gay couples, activists and Catholics in Malta.
Kostas Spiropoulos, from Storydoc, and Slavko Vukanovic, from Kinemastik, moderated the workshop and gave their professional input on the suggested topics and method of filming. The participants also gave their feedback and contributed towards the development of the various themes presented by their colleagues.
The workshop wrapped up with a viewing of similar short documentaries, followed by a short discussion on the subject matters and the efficacy of the techniques used to explore such themes. The following day, some of the participants braved the inclement weather to meet Kostas and Slavko in order to further explore the exciting ideas that were presented.
In the next couple of weeks, after further training on the process of filming and sound recording, the participants will start filming with a view to having the documentaries finalised in time for the public screenings of all documentaries in 5 participating countries in June.
A special thank you goes to Aġenzija Żagħżagħ that provided us with the location and equipment for the viewing of the documentaries!
