In the summer of 2013 Malta ‘was exploring the option’ of returning directly to Libya a boat of Somali refugees – men, women and children. It was only thanks to the prompt intervention of a group of human rights lawyers, including our Director and Legal Officer, that the attempted violation of the principle of non-refoulement was successfully prevented.
The Rule 39 we filed before the European Court of Human Rights, together with the enormous support we received from friends in Malta and overseas, highlighted the need for us to be united and strong in the face of increasingly negative attitudes towards migrants and refugees.
This time-line walks you through the events of July 2013, and after.
We will never forget those days. Nobody should ever forget those days.
